QB Nick Foles will reunite with head coach Andy Reid. Foles played for Reid from 2012-2014 with the Philadelphia Eagles which is when the quarterback played rather well in his young career.
Foles, the four-year player from the University of Arizona, had a stellar year in 2013 with the Eagles. He threw a career-high 2,891 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, only throwing two interceptions, and had an astounding 119.2 quarterback passer rating.
The 27-year old from Austin, Texas previously played one season with the St. Louis Rams (now called the Los Angeles Rams) and did not have a good season. He had seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions for 2,052 passing yards in 11 starts. He was then benched for his below-average performance by backup quarterback Case Keenum.
Foles knew that the Rams organization did not feel that he would be their long-term option at quarterback. He was asked to be released from the Rams after the organization used their 2016 first overall draft pick on quarterback Jared Goff out of the University of California. He wanted no part with the quarterback battle and he was released from the team on July 27.
Foles will be the Chiefs’ backup quarterback to Alex Smith. Smith is going into his 12th NFL season and had 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions for 3,386 passing yards with the chiefs last season leading them to the postseason. They fell short to the to the New England Patriots 27-20 in the divisional round.
NFL Media’s Ian Rappaport reported that Foles also had offers from the Dallas cowboys and Minnesota Vikings. The Cowboys were the favoring candidate for Foles when Cowboys backup Kellen Moore was carted off the field with a broken ankle that requires surgery. His recovery time is expected to be three to four months.
Foles has played in 39 games in his career and has thrown 53 touchdowns, 27 interceptions for 8,805 passing yards in four seasons. Foles will play for his third NFL team entering his fifth season.
