Kansas City Royals Aim For Ten Straights Wins

The Kansas City Royals (65-60) are the hottest team in baseball, winning nine of their last 10 games. They look to continue that hot streak against the Miami Marlins (65-60) and starting pitcher Jose Fernandez on Wednesday at 7:05 ET at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.

The Royals have not lost a game since Aug. 13 against the Minnesota Twins (49-76) in a 3-5 loss. Since then, they have beat the Detroit Tigers in three games and the Twins in five games along with a win in Miami last night. The Royals have scored 50 runs and have only allowed 13 runs during their nine-game winning streak. The pitching has been a vital factor in their winning performance.

Dillon Gee will get the start for Kansas City who is having a subpar season at 5-6 with 4.52 ERA.  In Gee’s last three starts, he has a record of 2-1, pitched 14.1 innings, let up six runs and struck out 16. He was dominant in his last start against the Twins with seven innings pitched, struck out seven and allowed one run in an 8-1 victory on Aug. 18.

For the Marlins, Jose Fernandez hasn’t had a dominant year but it is pitching well with a 12-7 record with a 3.05 ERA. He’s 0-2 in his last three games, allowed nine runs on 21 hits in 16 innings pitched but has thrown 20 strikeouts. He is second in the league in strikeouts with 204. Fernandez only needs six strikeouts to become the Marlins all-time single-season strikeout leader. Ryan Dempster has 209 strikeouts with 209 strikeouts in 2000.

The Marlins are on a mission to catch up to the St. Louis Cardinals (66-58) for the second spot in the National League Wild Card. After falling to the Royals in a tight 1-0 loss at Kauffman Stadium with a great performance from Royals’ pitcher Yordano Ventura. He allowed six hits and struck out six in six innings pitched. His record improved to 9-9 with a 4.27 ERA.

The Royals only trail the Baltimore Orioles (69-56) by four games in the American League Wild Card race. Kansas City two games left in Miami, then have a three-game series at Boston (71-54) and wrap up a three-game homestand against the New York Yankees (64-61) to wrap up the month of August.
