Kostyuk through as Spain’s Badosa retires

Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk advanced to the Wimbledon third round for the first time after her Spanish opponent Paula Badosa retired due to injury during their match on Friday. Kostyuk, 21 years old, was leading 6-2 1-0 when Badosa withdrew with a back problem. Badosa, who is the girlfriend of Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas, had previously missed the French Open because of a spinal stress fracture. She had also pulled out of the mixed doubles event with Tsitsipas, stating that it was the smartest decision to stop playing. Badosa confirmed that her injury was the same as the one she had been struggling with in recent weeks, a stress fracture. She expressed her disappointment, saying she had tried her best to play at Wimbledon but felt the injury again after her first-round match. Badosa plans to take a few days off and consult with her team to determine her next steps. Meanwhile, Kostyuk, who defeated eighth seed Maria Sakkari in the first round, will now face 25th seed Madison Keys in her upcoming match.
