Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri expressed his belief that his team deserved a point after their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. The equalizer came in stoppage time from goalkeeper Ivan Provedel. Sarri acknowledged that his team trailed for most of the match after Atletico’s Pablo Barrios scored in the 29th minute. However, Provedel’s header secured a crucial point for Lazio. Sarri felt that being behind at halftime was unfair considering the way both teams played and the team’s refusal to surrender to the circumstances was rewarded. Despite a poor start to their domestic season, Sarri believed that things were looking up for Lazio. He pointed out that in their last three games against Napoli, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid, they had a win, a defeat, and a draw. Sarri acknowledged the strength of Atletico Madrid’s counter-attack and the team’s struggle in the final 20 minutes when they were chasing the game. Feyenoord currently leads Group E after their victory over Celtic. Sarri emphasized the importance of the point gained against the favorites of the group. He admitted that he didn’t expect Provedel to score the last-minute equalizer but was pleased that they found a solution. Lazio’s next Champions League match will be against Celtic on October 4th.
