Lehmann most influential women’s player on Instagram ahead of World Cup

Switzerland’s Alisha Lehmann has become the top Instagram influencer heading to the Women’s World Cup, surpassing American Alex Morgan in the past year, according to Nielsen Sports. With 13.5 million followers, Lehmann’s social media presence has gained significant attention, making her as well known for her prowess on the pitch as her online influence. Jon Stainer, Nielsen’s global managing director, emphasized the impact of soccer players participating in the World Cup, stating that they are not only exceptional sportswomen but also social media powerhouses capable of driving meaningful conversations and building genuine connections with their followers.

According to Nielsen InfluenceScope, Lehmann’s followers have increased by 75% in the last year. This growth has propelled her past Roger Federer as the most popular Swiss sportsperson on Twitter. Lehmann has collaborated with various brands such as Boohoo, Gisada, MJ Jones, EA Sports, and Coca Cola, showcasing her versatility as an influencer. Additionally, she has been vocal about the issue of online trolls and was featured in UEFA’s 2022 “Respect” campaign against online bullying. Lehmann expressed her frustration with people who only see her Instagram presence and fail to recognize her as a football player, stating that when she doesn’t post football-related content, some assume she doesn’t play the sport.

Lehmann’s achievements extend beyond her social media influence. As a striker for Aston Villa, she scored six goals in 31 games this season and has earned 38 caps. Her popularity on Instagram places her ahead of other notable players like Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas, U.S. striker Alex Morgan, and England captain Leah Williamson, who unfortunately will miss the World Cup due to a knee injury. Both Lehmann and Putellas have proven to be valuable assets to brands, with each of their Instagram posts delivering over $100,000 of media value.

Among the top 10 most influential players identified by Nielsen, Germany’s Jule Brand experienced the highest growth in followers, with a remarkable increase of 517% in the past year. The remaining players in the top 10 are Megan Rapinoe (U.S.), Marta (Brazil), Jordyn Huitema (Canada), Alessia Russo (England), and Sakina Karchaoui (France). These rankings, created using Nielsen’s measurement tool InfluenceScope, take into account factors such as followers, follower growth, engagement rate, audience reachability, and average brand value per post on Instagram. This analysis helps determine which players provide the most social media value to their sponsors.

It is worth noting that Cristiano Ronaldo holds the title for the male player with the most Instagram followers, boasting over 530 million followers.

Overall, the rankings compiled by Nielsen provide valuable insights into the social media influence of Women’s World Cup players. As the tournament approaches, these influential athletes have the potential to make a significant impact both on and off the pitch.
