In a world where lions take the stage and sing their hearts out, Disney’s “The Lion King” leaves other notorious shows like “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Misérables” in “the dark shadowy place,” as it has become the top grossing Broadway production of all time!
Running since 1997, the show brings in viewers of all ages. From giddy children to giggling adults, both the music and characters have found a place in our hearts. The exotic costumes set the scene at Pride Rock as music by Sir Elton John and the lyrics of Sir Jon Rice, echo through the theatre and up into the Mezzanine.
Based on the animated Disney movie, the story follows the life of young Simba, son of the great “Muufaasaaa,” who will inherit his rightful place on the throne. Though trouble arises when his uncle, the devious Scar takes his place after his father’s death and exiles the young cub from his rightful home. After many years of living without worries with loyal friends, Timon and Pumbaa, Simba returns, defeats his uncle and finally finds his place in the great Circle of Life.
Bringing in $6.2 billion, the musical has more than tripled the opening revenue of the film, which was released in 1994 at $1 billion. The show has played around the world, from the bright lights of Broadway, all the way across the pond to historical West End London.
