De Saint Sernin was born in Belgium. The designer grew up in Paris. He completed her education at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré. Before launching his own eponymous brand in 2017, he worked at several French fashion brands, including Balmain. He soon gained attention for his hedonistic aesthetic and non-binary approach to clothing design. De Saint Sernin advocates “equal opportunity nudity,” dressing people of all sexes in sheer suits, crystal mesh tanks, lace-up briefs, and “body-formatted” knitwear. He has a large following of it-girls and it-boys for these outfits. The following include Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber, Bad Bunny, and Troye Sivan.
I always feel I relate to people’s stories more than a story that’s invented, so a lot of them are extremely autobiographical, he said to WWD last year. “When I launched the brand, the most essential thing was to be able to share my story through the collections.” He further said, “In the same manner that a musician or artist will pour their emotions into an album. I’m going to do the same thing in a collection.”
Fans of both De Saint Sernin and Demeulemeester will be able to observe the convergence of the two aesthetics. It will happen when De Saint Sernin debuts his first collection next year. Demeulemeester is famous for its gothic appearance and frequently mocks gendered dressing. De Saint Sernin will most likely continue his genderless design at Demeulemeester. He will be displaying a little more skin for the brand, which frequently covers its models in yards of draped black fabric. In a statement posted alongside the announcement, the company teased what’s to come now that De Saint Sernin has taken control.
