American Noah Lyles, who won the 100 meters four days ago, advanced to the men’s 200 meters final at the World Athletics Championships. Despite a delay caused by a golf cart crash, Lyles ran the fastest time in the semi-finals, clocking in at 19.76 seconds. The crash occurred while Lyles and the other runners were being transported from the warmup track to the stadium. The delay allowed heats two and three to be run before the first heat, as Jamaican Andrew Hudson received medical treatment for glass in his eye. Initially not listed among the finalists, Hudson was later added back in after officials decided on a nine-runner race. Hudson described the crash as happening in slow motion and expressed gratitude that most of the glass was removed from his eye. American Kenny Bednarek, the Olympic silver medalist, had the second-fastest time of 19.96 seconds, narrowly beating Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, the 100 meters silver medalist. Tebogo mentioned that Bednarek glanced at him before the finish line, but he remained focused on his own performance. Lyles, aiming to achieve the sprint double, is seeking to become the first man since Usain Bolt in 2015 to accomplish this feat. Other qualifiers for the final include American Erriyon Knighton in fourth place and Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, who finished fifth and broke a national record in the 200 meters this season. Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, who has been dealing with a foot injury, secured a spot in the final as one of the two fastest losers. However, De Grasse acknowledged that he was missing his usual 100-meter speed and struggled on the turn. His teammate Aaron Brown was disqualified for stepping on the lane line.
