Attorney General Dana Nessel said on Thursday that the FBI confirmed a man from Michigan had threatened to kill her. She said other Jewish leaders of the Michigan government were also threatened over social media.
In February, the man tweeted that he was “heading back to Michigan immediately threatening to carry out the sentence of death to anybody who is Jewish in the Michigan government if they don’t leave or confess,” according to the FBI’s criminal complaint against him.
The FBI determined that Jack Carpenter, a Michigan native now living in Texas, had sent threats to many states. He sends his threats through social media.
According to the FBI, Carpenter was arrested for assault once before and is now being investigated by Michigan State Police. He is being looked into for the possible theft of his girlfriend’s firearm.
The FBI claims that at the time of his arrest, Carpenter registered three guns with the Michigan Law Enforcement.
Carpenter is in custody and is scheduled to make an appearance in court on Friday, citing court documents.
“The FBI has confirmed that I was a target of the heavily armed defendant in this case,” tweeted Nessel.
As Nessel put it, “I certainly hope that the federal authorities consider this infringement as severely as my Hate Crimes and Domestic Terrorism Division treats assassination attempts against elected officials.”
Besides Dana Nessel, many additional state senators and representatives from Michigan are Jewish.
Elissa Slotkin, the representative for Michigan’s 7th congressional district, is also a Jew.
