Dylann Roof, the white man responsible for the mass shooting of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina last year, was recently assaulted by a fellow inmate at the Charleston County Detention Center.
Despite Roof being under protective custody, Dwayne Stafford, the man who reportedly roughed the shooter up, was able to take advantage of a vulnerable time during the guards’ watch to carry out the assault while Roof was showering.
Upon the spreading of this news, many people praised Stafford’s actions—laughing him as a hero of sorts. Some even suggested people donate money to the inmate.
It seems all this panned out because it hasn’t been long, and Stafford—who was locked up for strong armed robbery, assault, and lying to police—is now out on a $100,000 bond, according to WCSC-Charleston.
It isn’t clear who actually paid Stafford’s bond but The Charleston County Sheriff commented that he has “no control” over who posts bond for inmates, or how it is paid.
Roof, who could be facing the death penalty for the Charleston church massacre, isn’t pressing charges against Stafford.
