Marta named in Brazil’s squad for a sixth World Cup

Brazilian forward Marta has been named in Pia Sundhage’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. This will be Marta’s sixth World Cup appearance, and she will be leading Brazil’s quest for their first Women’s World Cup title. Other experienced players such as Debinha, Tamires, and Andressa Alves will also be part of the squad.

Despite being the all-time Women’s World Cup top scorer, Sundhage does not guarantee that Marta will feature in the starting lineup. Sundhage praised Marta, calling her an icon and stating that just being around her is contagious. However, Sundhage has not yet decided on the starting lineup and will assign roles to players based on their strengths.

Brazil will begin their training camp this week and will play a farewell friendly against Chile on Sunday before traveling to Australia. The squad includes goalkeepers Leticia Izidoro, Barbara, and Camila, defenders Antonia, Bruninha, Kathellen, Lauren, Monica Hickman, Rafaelle, and Tamires, midfielders Duda Sampaio, Kerolin, Luana, Adriana, Ana Vitoria, and Ary Borges, and forwards Andressa Alves, Geyse, Nycole, Bia Zaneratto, Debinha, Gabi Nunes, and Marta.
