Angels’ Matt Shoemaker Fractures Skull from Line Drive

It’s not an uncommon occurrence, and indeed it is an accepted danger for a pitcher. It has happened before in baseball, many times, but when you hear about this scary moment, you pause. Some are able to walk away fine with nothing but a bump and wounded pride. Others fare much worse. For Matt Shoemaker of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, it was a far scarier moment.

In the second inning against the Seattle Mariners, Matt Shoemaker took a line drive to the head off of the bat of Mariner third baseman Kyle Seager. The ball was measured to have been going at a speed of a 105 mph before making contact. He tried to stay on his feet as the ball popped into the air and landed in foul territory, but it wasn’t long until he sunk to his knees clutching the side of his head.

The rest of his teammates were gathered around him as Shoemaker was helped to his feet, towel pressed to the spot of impact. He was able to walk with some help from the training staff to the dugout and then was sent directly to the hospital. It was there, after further CT scans, that it was discovered that he had a small fracture in his skull. He also had a hematoma, where clotted blood was swelling within the tissues.

Despite the scary moment and the frightening injury, it appears as if Shoemaker is responding well. He will spend a night in the hospital and is scheduled to meet with a neurologist, but he is speaking and interacting well.

Shoemaker was having a quietly solid career on an underperforming team. His 9-13 record is a result of that, but his ERA, which sits just under 4 at 3.88 is a respectable enough number.

Here’s to hoping he has a speedy and successful recovery.

About Alec Montecalvo

Just an aspiring writer trying to make his mark on the world. Ask me and I'll explain to you why an All-Pitcher's Home Run Derby is a good idea, and how hockey is perhaps the greatest North American sport we have. That's all I got for now. I should get back to writing.

Have a tip we should know?
