1. Go through your clothes.
First things first, you have to throw away all the clothes that you’re hoarding. People who have trouble with an overflowing closet, usually have too many clothes. Most of those clothes are either outgrown, over worn, or favorites that you just can’t part with. If there are clothes that are in good condition, don’t hesitate donating them to the needy.
2. Clear up floor space.
If you have lots of long clothes, grouping them to one side of your closet will allow the rest of the floor to be more visible. Short clothes can be grouped together on the other side. Investing in a shoe rack, a little dresser, or organizational tool can put the smaller items in a more accessible spot.
3. Utilize the top shelves.
There are always things that are beloved, but to be honest, are only used seldomly. Fancy handbags, expensive baseball caps, or that unique tie you only wear on special occasions need a place where you can access them without digging through a bunch of everyday essentials. The top shelf is perfect for these things. If you prefer to put clothes up there, perhaps buying shelf dividers will help categorize and organize your closet.
4. Use the door.
There are many organizational tools that can be hung on the back of your doors to maximize closet space. Shoe racks, jewelry organizers, purse racks, and tie racks are all ideas that can help utilize your closet door and clean up clutter. To double the storage, maybe use the front of the door as well as the back.
5. Maintenance
The most important part of maximizing closet space is definitely keeping it the way it is. Hanging up clothes before you decide that throwing them on the floor is easier, because it’ll be a pain to pick up everything collectively. If your closet space is at capacity, but you are a shopaholic, make sure you’re discarding something every time you buy something new. That way your closet will not overflow.
No matter what size your closet is, cleaning it up will allow more space to be used. Keeping it that way is perhaps the most difficult part of the process. Taking some time to fix your closet seems tedious and boring but it is worth it in the long run.
