McConnell, Biden lapses highlight advanced age of US leaders

The recent incident involving Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell’s temporary inability to speak in Congress highlights the fact that many of America’s political leaders are significantly older than their counterparts in other democracies.

At 80 years old, Joe Biden is not only the oldest U.S. president to ever serve in the White House but also nearly two decades older than the median age of world leaders, which is 62, according to Pew Research.

While Biden is younger than President Paul Biya of Cameroon, who is 89 years old and the world’s oldest head of state, he could easily be a grandfather to leaders like Chilean President Gabriel Boric or Sanna Marin, the former prime minister of Finland, both of whom are 37 years old.

However, it is worth noting that Biden is actually younger than some members of the U.S. Congress.

Mitch McConnell, who is 81 years old, recently experienced a freeze-up during a news conference on Capitol Hill. He stood silently for 23 seconds before being led away from reporters, only to return later and assure them that he was fine.

This incident has raised concerns about McConnell’s mental fitness, especially considering his hospitalization and treatment for a concussion after a fall in March. It is worth mentioning that other senators, such as Chuck Grassley (89), Dianne Feinstein (89), and Bernie Sanders (81), are even older than McConnell.

Many members of Congress are in their 70s, and the median age of the Senate is 65.3, making it the oldest in history. This is in stark contrast to the median age of 38.8 years in the United States as a whole, as calculated by FiveThirtyEight.

In fact, the U.S. Senate has the seventh-highest average age among parliamentary bodies worldwide, surpassing countries with much older populations like Japan, Italy, and Greece, according to the Interparliamentary Union.

Given Biden’s advanced age, there have been discussions about whether he should run for a second term. His recent stumble on stage, cautious walking, and occasional verbal slip-ups have raised concerns about his physical and mental capabilities.

In the 2024 election, Biden may potentially face Donald Trump, who is 77 years old, as the Republican nominee. RushHourDaily polling indicates that many Americans believe neither Biden nor Trump should run due to their age.

When questioned about Biden’s age, the White House highlights his accomplishments, such as winning the 2020 presidential election, helping Democrats in the 2022 elections, and successfully passing various legislation as president.

It is worth noting that Biden does not rank among the top 10 oldest currently serving leaders worldwide, according to Pew. The list includes Mahmoud Abbas, the 87-year-old president of the Palestinian Authority, in addition to President Biya.
