McLaren sign Le Mans winner Hirakawa as F1 reserve for 2024

McLaren has announced that they have signed Ryo Hirakawa, Japan’s 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, as a reserve driver for the upcoming Formula One season. Hirakawa, who won last year’s Le Mans with Brendon Hartley and Sebastien Buemi, will also continue to race for Toyota in the world endurance series. McLaren stated that Hirakawa will provide support in the simulator and track testing. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella expressed excitement about working with Hirakawa and highlighted his experience and the benefits he will bring to the team. McLaren currently has Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as their regular race drivers, and they also have access to Mercedes F1 reserve Mick Schumacher this season. Previously, McLaren had Alex Palou as another reserve, but the deal fell through when Palou’s planned move to McLaren’s IndyCar team did not materialize.
