As if the Mets’ season wasn’t going badly enough, the team has officially hit rock bottom.
The Amazins suffered their worst loss in the franchise’s history yesterday at the hands of their divisional rival. The team fell to the Nats by a score of 25-4.

The Mets were doomed the second the game started, as Steven Matz clearly did not have a good command of his pitches. Matz allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in just 0.2 innings pitched– the most runs that he let up thus far in his career.
The Nationals' 7 runs were the most in the 1st inning of a game by an NL team this season.

Unfortunately for the Mets, his replacement didn’t do much to help their cause. Jacob Rhame came into the game and allowed six runs in two innings during a game which would continue to spiral downward to the point that New York called shortstop Jose Reyes to the rubber.
When a team decides to give a position player the ball, its not hard to figure out what’s going to happen next. Reyes allowed six runs in one inning, giving the infielder a less than satisfying 54.00 ERA. This call to the bullpen lasted a little longer than expected as Reyes threw 48 pitches, the most thrown by a non-pitcher in almost three years.

Some players actually began to mock the Mets. After Reyes hit Ryan Zimmerman with a pitch, the two-time All-Star jokingly pretended to charge the mound.

As for the Nationals, a familiar face in the Mets organization had an outstanding night at the plate. Daniel Murphy, who spent the first eight years of his MLB career with the club, went 3-4 with two home runs and a single that gave him 6 RBIs and three runs scored on the evening.
This game came just after the Mets stayed pat at the trade deadline, saying that they didn’t want to start rebuilding and that they planned to compete next season. After this performance, fans have been left wondering if the front office made the right call.
