Mets Struggling Geading Into Big Series Against Nats

The Mets had to play 37 games before getting their first crack at the Nationals this year. Now the series is here and things aren’t going too well for the Mets. They are losers of four straight games and currently sit in third place in the division. However, struggling right before big series’ against the Nationals is a common thing for the Mets. It happened twice last year. Before a three game series that began on July 31 the Mets lost two straight games and in those games there was the broken down Carlos Gomez trade that led to Wilmer Flores crying on the field and the next game blew a big lead and lost a game that had two late rain delays. Justin Upton hit the game winning home run after the first rain delay. Then before a series that began on Labor Day the Mets just lost two of three to a bad Marlins team. Those two series’ against the Nationals then both had something in common. The Mets swept them both. So maybe the Mets are in a perfect spot heading into this series.

The series kicks off Tuesday night at Citi Field with a big time pitching matchup. It will be Noah Syndergaard for the Mets coming off an eight inning performance where he also hit two home runs against Max Scherzer who is coming off a 20 strikeout performance against the Tigers. The next two pitching matchups will be Bartolo Colon for the Mets against Gio Gonzalez for the Nationals and Matt Harvey for the Mets and Stephen Strasburg for the Nationals. The Nationals will certainly be eager to get this series going. They were a heavy NL East favorite last year and didn’t live up to that as the Mets won the division and also went on to go to the World Series. They want to show the Mets that this year will be different, and the Mets want to show the Nationals that last year was no fluke.
