The Miami Marlins have announced they are parting ways with home-run champion and hitting coach Barry Bonds after only one year.

Despite finishing the season with a losing record, the Marlins had stretches of quality baseball that kept them in the playoff hunt for most of the year. But reports have surfaced that there was some clubhouse division when it came to Barry Bonds’ role as hitting coach. According to Craig Mish, a south-Florida SiriusXM radio host, Marlins manager Don Mattingly and Bonds clashed often, with the latter’s commitment being called into question.

There are even reports that Bonds and Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton did not meet eye-to-eye in hitting philosophies. Stanton endured the worst year of his young career. Although injuries plagued him for much of the year, his .240 average on the season was the lowest he has ever posted. His 27 home runs this year matched last year’s total, though last year he played in 74 games compared to the 119 he played in this year.

With Bonds at the helm as hitting coach, the Marlins produced conflicting numbers. Their team .263 batting average was fourth in the majors, but they were 27th amongst the 30 teams when it came to runs scored at 655. But players like outfielders Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna, and catcher J.T Realmuto saw improved seasons from last year.

Jon Heyman of Knuckleball cited a source that said the Marlins are looking for a more traditional hitting coach who studies video vigorously and is constantly working. Players lamented the fact that Bonds was a bit more laid back than what they were used to, which frustrated some while others, such as Yelich and Realmuto, thrived under Bonds’ teaching.

Over his career, Bonds posted a .298 average with 762 home runs and 514 RBI’s. He was hired prior to this season as an assistant hitting coach, working in tandem with Frank Menechino, who served as a second hitting coach. It is believed Menechino is staying with the team.

Bonds awaits to be elected to the baseball Hall of Fame, though his legacy has been tainted with steroid allegations over the past decade.
