Militants attack air force base in central Pakistan, says military

An air force training base in Mianwali, Pakistan was attacked by nine Islamist militants on Saturday, resulting in damage to three “non-operational” aircraft. The military confirmed that all assailants were killed by security forces. Prior to entering the base, three militants were already killed, while the remaining attackers were cornered before the clearance operation commenced. The military statement did not mention any casualties among security personnel. The attack, which occurred early in the morning, caused alarm among nearby residents due to the sound of gunfire. Zeeshan Niazi, a resident of Mianwali, reported hearing intense gunshots from 3 a.m. until around 7 a.m. The military clarified that a total of nine militants were killed during the attack, contradicting an earlier statement that mentioned six militants. According to the military, the attack did not cause any damage to operational assets of the Pakistan Air Force, but three non-operational aircraft and a fuel tanker were affected. The military statement praised the swift and effective response of the troops, which successfully foiled the attack and ensured the safety of personnel and assets. Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), an Islamist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement sent to journalists by its spokesperson. TJP emerged this year and little is known about the group, although it has carried out several high-profile attacks in Pakistan. These include an attack in July that resulted in the killing of 12 soldiers at a military base in Balochistan province. The article was reported by Gibran Peshimam, with additional reporting by Saud Mehsud and Mubasher Bukhari. The editing was done by William Mallard and Jamie Freed.
