Mitsotakis to be sworn in as Greek PM after landslide victory

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leader of Greece’s New Democracy party, will become prime minister on Monday following a decisive win in a repeat election on Sunday, securing his second four-year term. New Democracy, a centre-right party, garnered 40.5% of the vote and 158 seats in the 300-seat parliament, more than 20 points ahead of the leftist Syriza, which governed the country during Greece’s decade-long economic crisis from 2015-2019. Mitsotakis, a 55-year-old former banker and scion of a powerful political family, has pledged to increase revenue from the crucial tourist industry, create jobs, and raise wages to approach the European Union average. Greek newspapers hailed the outcome as a “historic win,” with Ta Nea proclaiming on its front page “Mitsotakis’s absolute dominance, with no opponent.”

Mitsotakis is scheduled to meet with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Monday to receive a mandate to form a government, after which he will be sworn in. He has vowed to continue with reforms aimed at rebuilding the country’s credit rating after the debt crisis that plagued Greece for a decade. Although the COVID-19 pandemic and a fatal rail crash in February exposed weaknesses in Greece’s health and public transport systems, rising prices and economic hardship have recently been the primary concerns of voters.

Sunday’s election was a significant defeat for Alexis Tsipras’s Syriza party, which lost over 30 lawmakers. It also resulted in the entry of three fringe right-wing and nationalist parties, including the anti-immigrant ‘Spartans,’ into parliament with a combined 35 seats. Tsipras described the outcome as “negative for democracy and society.”
