A german woman was sentenced to 14 years in prison for killing four of her babies on Wednesday.
The 45-year-old woman was found guilty of four counts of manslaughter after a police investigation. Police found remains of eight newborns wrapped in towels and plastic bags at the home in the Bavarian town of Wallenfels.
According to court spokesman Ingo Knecht-Guenther, after taking in the results of a psychiatric evaluation, “the judge found the woman fully criminally liable.” The other four infants were in a state that did not allow certainty on whether the babies were born alive or not when they were born when they were found last year. Because of this, the woman was only tried for the deaths of four children.
Not only was the 45-year-old woman found guilty, but her 55-year-old husband was acquited on charges of complicity in failing to stop the killings between 2003 and 2013.
Til Wager, the defense lawyer, said the mother had “blocked out” the pregnancies and panicked. “The opinion of the court was fair and with an understanding for the situation of my client,” Wagler said. “We will not appeal the ruling.”
Local reports identified the woman as Andrea Goeppner, but she was not named by Coburg city court officials.
