Morocco and East African co-bid to host future Africa Cup of Nations finals

Morocco has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals, taking over from Guinea who lost the right to host the tournament last year. The co-bid from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda has been granted the hosting rights for the 2027 edition. This decision was made after Algeria, Zambia, and a joint bid from Benin and Nigeria withdrew their bids before the vote by the Confederation of African Football’s executive committee. Morocco, a favorite to host the tournament, sees this as a positive development for their hopes of co-hosting the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Spain. However, the joint East African bid for 2027 came as a surprise, bringing the finals back to the region for the first time since 1976. Algeria was also a candidate but withdrew a day before the decision was made. Kenya had previously been awarded the hosting rights in 1996 but was stripped due to inadequate preparation. The country recently had a FIFA ban lifted for government interference in their football federation. CAF president Patrice Motsepe emphasized the importance of spreading the tournament across different regions to contribute to the development of football. The 2025 finals will mark only the second time Morocco has hosted Africa’s most popular sporting event, with the previous occasion being in 1988. Morocco had withdrawn from hosting the 2015 Cup of Nations finals due to concerns about the Ebola virus in West Africa, a decision that was strongly criticized by CAF, resulting in a two-year ban from African competition. However, Morocco has since worked to strengthen ties with other African countries through football, hosting various CAF events and allowing nations with poor pitch or stadium conditions to use their facilities. The 2025 tournament will be held in six stadiums across Agadir, Casablanca, Fes, Marrakech, Rabat, and Tanger. The history of hosting the Cup of Nations has been tumultuous in recent years, with South Africa stepping in for war-torn Libya in 2013, Cameroon replacing Guinea in 2019, and Egypt stepping in for Cameroon in 2019. The 2021 edition was delayed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ivory Coast was scheduled to host the 2023 event but it has been postponed by six months due to concerns about the rainy season in West Africa. The upcoming Cup of Nations finals will take place from January 13 to February 11.
