Moscow says 700,000 children from Ukraine conflict zones now in Russia

Russia has brought approximately 700,000 children from conflict zones in Ukraine into Russian territory, according to Grigory Karasin, head of the international committee in Russia’s upper house of parliament. Karasin stated on his Telegram messaging channel that these children sought refuge from the bombing and shelling in Ukraine. The movement of children occurred primarily in the early stages of the war and before Ukraine launched a counter offensive to regain occupied territories. Russia claims that their program aims to protect orphans and abandoned children in the conflict zone, while Ukraine and the United States argue that many children have been illegally deported or forcibly removed from their homes. In July 2022, the United States estimated that Russia forcibly deported 260,000 children, while Ukraine’s Ministry of Integration of Occupied Territories reported that 19,492 Ukrainian children are currently considered illegally deported.
