Lacey Spears, 27, of Scottsville, Kentucky, is being charged with killing her son by poisoning the 5 year old with salt. While the incident is shocking in itself, the mother decided to publicly document the sons falling health on social media.
The mother kept feeding the young child salt that caused his sodium levels to reach toxic highs. There was no medical explanation as to why she was doing this, but she kept trying to portray herself as a loving and caring mother on social media sites.
Prosecutors said this exposure to that much sodium caused the boy to suffer from a swollen brain, seizures, and would eventually kill the young boy.
While the poisoning was taking place, Spears made sure she kept up with social media by posting 28 times online throughout 11 days. The last post commented on the boy’s death where she posted, “Garnett the great journeyed onward today at 10:20 a.m.”
The boy was being held at Westchester Medical Center, and his mother was sharing a room with the boy. It was believed that she exposed the boy to more sodium by using the boys feeding tube.
The child has had numerous health concerns in the five short years he was living, and now many are wondering if the mother is to blame for those incidences as well. “My Sweet Angel Is In The Hospital For The 23rd Time,” Spears tweeted on Nov. 9, 2009,”Please Pray He Gets To Come Home Soon.” It is also rumored that Spears would lie to medical staff claiming the boy had illnesses that he didn’t.
Spears is being charged for the murder of her son, and her Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace pages are being examined as evidence. Supreme Court Justice Robert Neary, states that there is evidence of research on Spears’ iPhone of her looking up the dangers and risks about sodium in children and iodized salt.
The jury selection process has just begun, and the court hearing will be following soon.
