A mother from Illinois has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after she tried to poison her 9-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.
Krystle El Khatib’s two children were diagnosed with poisoning at a local hospital after El Khatib crushed up benzodiazepine pills and put them in her children’s apple juice, and forced them each to drink two glasses each.
When her son refused to drink the concoction El Khatib threaten to hit the young boy. The mother then made herself a similar drink and attempted to kill herself.
El Khatib claimed that her motive behind poisoning her children was because she was upset with the children’s father who she claimed did not spend enough time with her and the children.
The father discovered that his children were poisoned after he found out that his son woke up vomiting and he could not wake up his mother. The young boy then continued to text his father.
Chicago’s WGN TV stated that the children were shortly taken to a local hospital in Schiller Park; the two were treated and then released to their father’s custody.
Krystle seemed set on trying to kill her children and it seemed like a planned idea, after reports that she texted her husband the day before where she stated, “At least if I go to hell, I’ve already been there. The kids go to heaven. Peace from all.”
According to the Tribune she stated that she, “wanted all three of them to go to sleep and not wake up.”
She was also taken to the hospital to recover where according to WGN, she told a social worker, “that she brought her kids into this world and she can take them out.”
Benzodiazepines are not often a drug in which people overdose on and the chances of morbidly because of the drug are slim especially if treated at the hospital, but nonetheless this exposure to the drug was harmful for the young children.
El Khatib has been detained by authorities and her bail has been set at 1.5 million dollars.
