It was a huge bust-up on stage in the Ms. Sri Lanka Beauty Queen Pageant in Colombo on April 4. Pushpika De Silva won the title of ‘Mrs. Sri Lanka 2021’ and was crowned in the Colombo theater. The pageant, considered being a prestigious event for married women, was held at Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in Colombo at the weekend and televised on National TV. Moments after the 31-year-old De Silva was crowned the winner, the former titleholder of ‘Mrs. Sri Lanka’ 2019 pageant, ‘Caroline Jurie’ announced on stage that she was ineligible to hold the title. She told the audience, “There is a rule that you all have to be married and not divorced. The crown goes to the first runner-up.” Following the announcement, she walked up to the declared winner and untangled the crown from De Silva’s hair forcibly in what was witnessed as an enormous embarrassment for the latter. Mrs. Jurie, 28, wore the crown on the first runners up to the head while Pushpika left the stage in tears.
The video of the incident also surfaced on YouTube showing this awkward episode that happened on stage. Jurie claimed that De Silva was divorced and therefore not eligible for the ‘Mrs. Sri Lanka’ Beauty Pageant.

On April 6, Pushpika De Silva was re-crowned ‘Mrs Sri Lanka’ in a ceremony. Chandimal Jayasinghe, the national director of Mrs Sri Lanka World, informed the media about her regaining the title and expressed disappointment upon Jurie’s behavior on the stage. He said that the judges and the organizing committee had declared the winner on stage, and this incident should not have taken place at all.
