New Overwatch Hero Revealed Alongside Balance Changes

Today is a big day for fans of the mega-popular arena shooter Overwatch, as developer Blizzard revealed the first new playable hero since the game’s launch back in late May. A character fitting the role of “support sniper” has long been rumored by internet sleuths hunting for info about future content for the game. That character was officially named “Ana” today, in a pair of videos released by Blizzard.

In addition to the above demonstrations of Ana’s abilities in the game, she is also revealed to be the mother of another character already in the game, Pharah. Interestingly, the name “Sombra” does not appear anywhere in either video. Speculation had long since linked the upcoming sniper-support character with the name Sombra, which is referenced on several of the game’s maps and by one of its characters. With this new character not being named Sombra, it now appears as though she could be an entirely different hero yet to be revealed.

A new page detailing Ana is now up over at Blizzard’s official site for the game.

There’s also been some news regarding future balance updates and changes to Overwatch’s competitive mode. In an upcoming patch, Blizzard will be putting “hero limits” into place for each team, preventing either side from picking “stacked” teams where more than one player chooses the same hero. This is undoubtedly due to the frustration expressed by the player base after encountering certain strategies, which required little coordination to perform, but a great deal of teamwork to counter.

Competitive’s “Sudden Death” feature is also being removed, in favor of letting games end in a tie. The current format often left games seemingly decided by a coinflip, which a majority of players viewed as unrewarding.

In addition to the competitive mode changes, a few balance updates were hinted at in GameSpot’s interview with principal designer Scott Mercer.

“There’s been a lot of talk in the community about how D.Va and Zenyatta felt a little bit underpowered, so we’re making changes to them,” Mercer explained. “Zenyatta is getting a little more shields, and he goes a lot faster when he uses his Ultimate.

“D.Va’s Defense Field, instead of clicking it and it lasting three or four seconds and having a long cooldown, it’s now something where you can toggle it on and off and there’s a meter that runs that.”

For many Overwatch players, these changes have been long awaited, making today a very exciting time.

About Vince Cunningham

I'm an avid reader, writer, gamer, moviegoer, and bingewatcher. I often consider my day a success if I don't have to put shoes on, and enjoy nothing more than consuming a great piece of escapism. My tendency to develop nonfictional feelings for fictional characters is unfortunate at times.
