New Zealand shooting: Two people, shooter dead in Auckland

At least two people were killed and multiple people injured in a shooting at a construction site in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, according to authorities. The police confirmed that the shooter was dead and stated that the incident was contained and isolated. They also reassured the public that it was not a national security risk.

The shooting occurred in a busy street in the city center, just hours before the opening match of the ninth Women’s soccer World Cup at Eden Park in Auckland. The Italy team’s training was delayed as players were unable to leave their hotel, while the U.S. team confirmed the safety of all its players and staff.

In response to the incident, several streets in Auckland were cordoned off, ferry services into the city were cancelled, and bus routes were detoured. The police provided details of the shooter’s movements, stating that he moved through the building site and eventually contained himself within the elevator shaft. Further shots were fired before the shooter was found dead.

The police emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and updates would be provided regarding injuries and the circumstances of the incident. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins cancelled his trip to Hamilton and returned to the national capital, Wellington. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown urged residents to stay at home and avoid traveling into the city center.
