On Wednesday, owners of NFL teams have unanimously approved a new policy regarding the national anthem that will require players to stand for the song if they are on the field during the performance. However, players will be given the opportunity to remain in the locker room if they prefer.
Teams will be subjected to fines if a player on the field does not show proper respect during the performance of the anthem, including attempts to sit or kneel.
“This season, all league and team personnel shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room until after the Anthem has been performed. We believe today’s decision will keep our focus on the game and the extraordinary athletes who play it — and on our fans who enjoy it.”
The previous policy required players to be on the field for the anthem, but only suggested that they “should” stand. This policy will create a more unified look for the team, while still allowing those who don’t want to stand to simply sit in the locker room until the performance is over.
