NHL: Maple Leafs Acquire Frederick Andersen From Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs combined to be one of the first set of teams to make a splash in the NHL summer trading season.

The Ducks sent goaltender Frederik Andersen to Toronto in exchange for the 30th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round pick in 2017, who immediately signed him to a five-year contract, according to David Satriano of NHL.com. With the trade and signing, the Maple Leafs hope that they’ve found their No. 1 goaltender.

Andersen, 26, went 22-9-7 with a .919 save percentage and a 2.30 goals-against average  in 43 games (37 starts) for Anaheim, some very solid numbers. He split the season with John Gibson, 22, who the Ducks likely see as their No. 1 goaltender of the future. The duo won the William Jennings Trophy for allowing the least amount of goals in the NHL.

This past season, the Leafs goaltending situation was a circus. Their No. 1, Jonathan Bernier, went 12-21-3 with a .908 save percentage and a 2.88 GAA  in 38 games. Garrett Sparks finished at 6-9-1 with a .893 save percentage and a 3.02 GAA. James Reimer, who was traded to the San Jose Sharks before the NHL trade deadline, went 11-12-7 with a .918 save percentage and a 2.49 GAA during the 2015-16 season with the Leafs. Reimer was clearly their best goaltender this past season.

The porous goaltending was a major reason for the Leafs woes this season. The team finished dead last in the NHL with a 29-42-11 record and allowed 246 goals, the fourth most in the league. Toronto hopes that Andersen will provide them with some much-needed stability.
