Niger coup widely condemned, countries urge return to order

Niger President Mohamed Bazoum is currently being held in the presidential palace, and it is unclear who is in charge of the country following a military coup. The coup, which occurred on Wednesday evening, has received widespread condemnation. France and the West African regional bloc ECOWAS have called for Bazoum’s immediate release and a return to constitutional order. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also expressed the need for the restoration of constitutional order. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has stated that cooperation with Niger’s government depends on its commitment to democratic standards. The U.S. also supports taking action at the United Nations Security Council to de-escalate the situation in Niger. African Union Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat has confirmed that he spoke with Bazoum and that the president is “fine”. Niger’s coup is the seventh in West and Central Africa since 2020 and could have serious consequences for democratic progress and the fight against jihadist militants in the region. A new leader has not yet been publicly announced.

The coup was initiated by the presidential guard, which is headed by General Omar Tchiani. However, General Tchiani was not among the soldiers who announced Bazoum’s replacement on television. There is still uncertainty regarding the situation, and political and security elites are currently discussing the next steps.

Supporters of the coup have ransacked and set fire to the headquarters of the ruling party in Niamey, the capital. They have also gathered in front of the National Assembly, waving Russian flags and expressing anti-French sentiments. The interior ministry has condemned acts of vandalism and banned demonstrations until further notice. The army has expressed its support for the soldiers who announced the coup and stated that its priority is to avoid destabilizing the country and protect the president and his family.

Juntas in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso have grown closer to Russia since taking charge in 2020 and 2022, respectively. However, the United States has not seen any credible indications of Russian involvement in the coup in Niger. Niger’s role has become increasingly important for Western powers in the fight against the Sahel’s insurgency since relations with Burkina Faso and Mali’s juntas soured. Insecurity has been a persistent issue since Bazoum’s election in 2021, with jihadist militants gaining ground in the region.

France landed a military aircraft in Niger on Thursday morning, despite an airspace closure imposed overnight. The French foreign and defense ministries have not yet commented on the situation. Bazoum and Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou have urged democratic forces in the country to resist the power grab. The United Nations has put its humanitarian operations on hold in Niger, citing escalating violence, socio-economic challenges, and climate change. All activities of political parties have been suspended until further notice, according to Colonel Amadou Abdramane. Bazoum has vowed to protect democratic gains in a social media post, but has not made any further statements.
