Nightclub fire kills at least 13 in Murcia in Spain

Emergency services in southeast Spain have confirmed that at least 13 people have died in a nightclub fire in Murcia. Rescue teams are still searching for individuals who remain unaccounted for following the blaze. Outside the club, shocked young people embraced each other as they awaited information about the incident. One survivor, who chose to remain anonymous, stated that they had left the club just moments before the alarms went off and the lights went out, signaling the fire. They also mentioned that five family members and two friends were missing. Reports from Spanish media indicate that several of the deceased were part of a group celebrating a birthday.

Diego Seral, a representative from Spain’s National Police, informed reporters that the bodies were discovered in the Fonda Milagros nightclub, one of three interconnected clubs that suffered significant fire damage, including the collapse of its roof. The collapse has made it challenging to locate victims and determine the exact origin of the fire. Due to high temperatures and the risk of further collapse, police investigators have not yet been able to access the site.

Seral explained that the identification of the bodies would require time. The death toll, which has been steadily increasing, currently stands at 13 according to emergency services. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Murcia’s Mayor Jose Ballesta previously informed reporters that seven bodies were found in the same area of the first floor where the fire started. Maria Dolores Albellan, a spokesperson for the Teatre nightclub, stated that the fire originated in the neighboring club, Fonda Milagros, before spreading to the adjacent clubs.

In response to the tragedy, Ballesta declared three days of mourning, and flags were lowered to half-mast outside Murcia’s City Hall. Footage released by the fire service showed firefighters working to control the flames and revealed the extensive damage to the nightclub’s roof. Ballesta expressed devastation during an interview on Spanish TV channel 24h and confirmed that rescuers were still searching for missing individuals. He also mentioned that the fire, which began around 6 a.m., had been brought under control.

Four people have been hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The article concludes with the reporter’s name and the editors responsible for the article, as well as a mention of Thomson RushHourDaily’ Trust Principles.
