Nina Dobrev Officially Returning to ‘The Vampire Diaries’

After months of speculating rumors, Nina Dobrev has officially announced her return as Elena Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries. Dobrev posted a photo on her Instagram account this Thursday morning revealing her return to the CW show.

The Instagram post revealed Dobrev’s appearance in the show’s finale which is titled “I Was Feeling Epic”.

Julie Plec, the executive producer for TVD, commented to Variety that she is thrilled to bring the show to an end the way she always intended. Plec stated that The Vampire Diaries can now conclude with Nina back to help her and the cast say goodbye.

Another executive producer, Kevin Williamson, commented that he is so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode truly epic.

Nina Dobrev left the show after TVD’s sixth season to focus on her career in film. In the show, Dobrev’s character Elena was induced into a deep sleep that would only be lifted with the death of her best friend Bonnie.

In TVD’s duration, Dobrev has not just played Elena Gilbert, but also Elena’s vampire doppelgänger Kathrine Pierce/Petrova. The actress also played different doppelgänger ancestors named Amara and guest starred on the TVD spinoff The Originals.

The CW series initially followed a high school girl who fell in love with two brother vampires Stefan and Damon. The Vampire Diaries was an instant hit in 2009 and brought in over 4.91 million viewers weekly.

Before the premiere of TVD, the CW’s biggest viewership audience was in 2006. Meaning that the vampire drama is one of the highest watched shows in the network’s history.

The network assumes since Dobrev’s exit and CW’s core audience shift toward online streaming, the series has declined greatly in viewership. Currently, TVD’s ratings are averaging around 950,000 viewers with a .4 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

The Vampire Diaries finale episode was written by co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson. The episode is also set to be directed by Plec.

The finale of The Vampire Diaries is expected to air on the CW on March 10th.
