North Korea: “No intention to examine” Hyundai chief’s bid to visit

North Korea has stated that it will not consider the plan of Hyundai Group’s chief to visit Mount Kumgang in North Korea, according to a statement from North Korea’s foreign ministry. The chairwoman of Hyundai Group, Hyun Jeong-eun, has expressed her desire to visit North Korea in August and has submitted applications to South Korea’s unification ministry. This move is significant as Hyundai’s late founder, Chung Ju-Yung, was born in North Korea.

In response to media reports from the South, North Korea has clarified that it has not been informed about any South Korean individual’s intention to visit and has no intention to examine such a request. North Korea firmly stated that its policy does not allow entry by any person from South Korea into its territory, and this policy will remain unchanged in the future.

The appointment of a conservative scholar as South Korea’s new unification minister, who is known for being critical of North Korea’s human rights record, has added further strain to the already tense relationship between the two Koreas. North Korea has consistently rejected any criticism of its human rights conditions, viewing it as part of a larger plot to overthrow its government.
