Pine Bush High School in Pine Bush New York got a lot of attention after the student body president decided to alter the nation’s “Pledge of Allegiance.”

The student decided to recite the word’s “One nation under Allah,” instead of “One nation under God” while saying the pledge over the intercom Wednesday morning.

The Times Herald-Record reported that the student then continued to recite the pledge in Arabic, a statement that got the whole school into commotion. Some students decided to sit down in protest, while other students supported the decision. The events “divided the school in half” stated the school superintendent, Joan Carbone.

While the school did not break any laws that many believe that the pledge needed to be read in English, the commotion that offended a lot of students and people resulted in the school having to issue an official apology where they wrote,

“We sincerely apologize for having the Pledge of Allegiance recited this morning in the high school in a language other than English. In our school district the Pledge of Allegiance will only be recited in English as recommended by the Commissioner of Education.”

Andrew Zink the student who read the pledge that morning, claims, “I knew many wouldn’t support it,” but then stated that he would do it again because he believes it is the right thing to do.

Other students went to Twitter to call out Zink’s actions by saying,

“People who don’t like PB should take a vacation. I hear the Middle East is nice this time a year?” While another student tweeted, “The pledge should always be said in English. They could’ve just said “Good Morning” in a different language each day.”
