NYPD Officer Shot and Killed

On Tuesday night, October 20, a New York police officer was shot in the head during the chase of a robbery suspect.

After receiving reports about an armed robbery in East Harlem, officer Randolph Holder, 33, responded and was tragically shot. He died a few hours later in a hospital that same night, said police commissioner William J. Bratton.

“Three generations of police in this family,” said Bratton about Holder, who was a son and grandson of police officers. “And tonight, he did what every other officer in the NYPD does. When the call comes, he runs toward danger. It’s the last time he will respond to that call.”

Holder and his partner saw the suspect riding a bike and began the chase knowing that they were chasing more than one person. They exchanged gunfire with the suspects, and seconds later Holder was shot and killed.

“We are fighting to understand the loss of a man who did so much, cared so much, dedicated so much to protecting others,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the late-night news conference, “An immigrant who wanted to give back to his city and his country.”

During the past year, four officers of the NYPD have been killed. Brian Moore was shot and killed in May, when he was sitting with his partner in a police car in Queens. In December 2014, officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were killed while in their police car. The gunman shot both officers in the head and then killed himself. Now the city is suffering the loss of yet another police officer, Randolph Holder.

Holder joined the department in 2010 and ended up giving his life in exchange for protecting the city. “In the words of Abraham Lincoln, a man who gave the last full measure of his devotion on behalf of a city he loved,” Blasio stated during the conference Tuesday night.
