Officers Turn Their Backs on Mayor de Blasio

Over 25,000 police officers gathered recently to honor one of their fallen officers. The service for, officer Rafael Ramos and his partner, who were killed in an ambush last week was a tribute that would reach out to Ramos’ family as well as the other fallen officers families.

One of the biggest moments of the tribute happened when New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, took the podium. As the mayor started his speech the New York City police officers in attendance made a bold and loud statement as they the masses turned their back upon the Mayor. It is a general consensus among local NYPD officers who feel that the Mayor is responsible for the ongoing issues and mistrust that resulted in the deaths of these police officers.

This is not the first time this week that De Blasio felt mass scrutiny among the law enforcement community. He recently spoke at he graduation for New NYPD police officers, and was booed and cheered by the graduating class.

De Blasio is in a very tight position these days, and is the scapegoat for the societal problems that have been enfolding amongst the law enforcement of New York’s community. He remained calm throughout both incidences, and wanted to insure the graduates,  “You serve the people of the greatest city in the world. You serve in the greatest and finest police department on this Earth,” and “It takes a special kind of person to put their lives on the line for others.”

Does De Blasio deserve this negative press and reactions for reaching out and trying to comfort these families and officers and congratulate the newest members of the force? Some people, like NAACP President Cornell William Brooks, say that it is unfair to place blame on politicians like De Blasio in times like these. Brooks made the statement, “To link the criminal insanity of a lone gunman to the peaceful protests and aspirations of many people across the country including the attorney general, the Mayor and even the President is simply not fair.” The law enforcement community feels otherwise at the moment, but maybe they will understand that events like these may be out of his control.
