One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Zoo Sculpture

Ocean garbage is a worldwide problem, a disease that has been spreading since we invented manufactured products. From plastic bags to microwaves, the ocean holds garbage unthinkable. In order to raise awareness against this atrocity, one artist named Angela Pozzi has taken a step forward.
She has been collecting garbage for the past 6 years along the 300-mile long shores of the West Coast. Since then she has made 66 sculptures out of 18 tons of garbage. 17 of her works are installed at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.
Pozzi’s Washed Ashore; Art Save the Sea project gives the art a realistic touch despite the kind of materials used. The animals, such as puffins, whales, turtles and other marine wildlife is depicted true to the real physical structure, with feathers and fins, whiskers, and tails.

“It has to be good art, or else it won’t do the message,” she says on a tour of the works a few days before the exhibition “Washed Ashore: Art to Save The Sea” opened at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The works are on view until September 5.

Ever since she was a child, she would innocently find ways to reuse things in her house. That habit of hers has turned that reusing into environmental terms. Scientists are proud of her efforts to raise awareness for ocean animals and to protect them.

“I need to reach inside of people,” she says. That doesn’t mean doing away with scientific facts, “but you have to grab them, and you have to make them care and you have to get their attention,” she says.

About 315 billion pounds of plastic exists that is littering the oceans. This deadly weapon confuses the fish into thinking it is food and kills many in the process.

Pozzi hopes to spread this project globally where everyone will participate and save the oceans. She wants the world to understand the importance of the oceans and its creatures.

About Haadiya Abbas

I love writing. It's my passion something I have been doing since forever. Along with my writing assignments and essays that I would get at school, I would write my own excerpts and interesting day to day stories on my own. It is a must that I write something day to day because it helps me sort my thoughts and imagination. I need something written to make sure what I am thinking makes sense.
