Having to deal with a mess and clutter can be frustrating, and if your feeling overwhelmed, it’s most definitely time to get rid of useless objects. Cleaning out your house doesn’t have to take place solely in the spring,, and if you’re a packrat then get ready, because it’s time to de-clutter.
How to start you ask? The key to cleaning out your home is to get rid of a few things at a time. Set a goal, and give yourself a set amount of time to complete your goal. Say you want to get rid of half of the stuff in your closet to make room for some newer clothes. Give yourself two weeks, and sit down every Tuesday and Thursday for one hour and work on getting rid of that pesky stuff you don’t need. For a lot of people, getting rid of things can be hard especially if their sentimental objects, but use the three-year rule as a guide. I you are hesitant to throw something away, ditch it if you haven’t used it in three years.
It’s okay to keep some sentimental stuff (such as your first communion dress or the blanket your grandma made you), but there’s honestly no point in keeping that stereo system your dad used in the 90’s. Will you use this object more than a few times in the next year? If the answer is no; get rid of it. It may be hard in the moment, but chances are in a month, you’ll forget all about that plaid scarf you bought when you were 15 (it’s never going to come back into style, just accept it).
So start slow, but meet your goal. Set aside a specific amount of time every week and before you know it, your house will be clutter free.
