The first case of monkeypox (mpox) in Pakistan has been confirmed by the National Institute of Health in Islamabad.

According to a health ministry press release, a guest who had just arrived in Pakistan tested positive and was being quarantined at a hospital in the country’s capital.

According to the NIH, there is no indication of the virus spreading regionally in Pakistan.

In July 2022, the World Health Organization issued a global health emergency owing to the spread of mumps, which is communicable via close contact and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled skin blisters. The group’s attentiveness remained constant in November.

On November 28, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially changed the virus that causes monkeypox to “mpox” due to concerns that the previous term would perpetuate negative perceptions.

According to the National Institutes of Health, provincial health departments, border health services, and district health authorities, surveillance in Pakistan should include laboratory diagnostics, contact tracing, rapid identification of suspected cases, and the provision of care and isolation of cases to prevent transmission.

Inspectors from throughout the country have sent in 22 samples for examination since May 2022.
