Peace-themed torch unveiled for Paris 2024 Olympics

The design of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic torch was revealed on July 25. The torch, created by Mathieu Lehanneur, imitates the reflection of the Eiffel Tower on the surface of the Seine river. Lehanneur described the torch as conveying a peaceful energy. The torch is symmetrical from top to bottom and through 360 degrees, with soft curves representing peacefulness and symmetry symbolizing equality between athletes. It is made of lightweight polished steel and has a champagne color. The lower half of the torch features a relief pattern that mimics the movement of the Seine. The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games will take place along the Seine, with over half a million spectators expected to attend. Lehanneur expressed his hope that the torch visually represents the sporting event that Paris 2024 aims to deliver. He emphasized that the magic lies not in the torch itself, but in the flame. The torch will be lit at Greece’s ancient Olympia on April 16, marking the countdown to the Games. It will then travel to Marseille on May 8 and pass through various cities and landmarks, including Strasbourg, the Pantheon in Paris, and the Mont Saint-Michel, before reaching some of France’s overseas territories. Tony Estanguet, the President of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, praised the torch as “very, very beautiful” and noted its perfect balance in the hand. The torch’s designer, Mathieu Lehanneur, described the process of designing the torch as more technically challenging than he initially anticipated. He aimed to move away from the torch being seen as an object of conquest and instead focused on capturing the essence of the flame.
