Pegula races to second-round victory over Spain’s Bucsa

American fourth seed Jessica Pegula defeated Cristina Bucsa in the second round at Wimbledon on Thursday. Despite a slight setback in the second set, Pegula secured a 6-1 6-4 victory over her opponent, who is ranked 74 places below her.

Pegula dominated the first set, swiftly wrapping it up in just 22 minutes as Bucsa struggled to find her footing. With a powerful serve, Pegula forced Bucsa to make errors, ultimately closing the set as the evening shadows grew longer on Court One.

In the second set, Pegula continued her strong performance, quickly establishing a 4-0 lead by outplaying Bucsa in baseline rallies with her powerful groundstrokes. However, Bucsa managed to regain her form and fought back, utilizing drop shots and precise angles to win four consecutive games. Despite Bucsa’s resurgence, Pegula remained determined and saved two match points in the eighth game. In the end, Pegula sealed the victory with a blistering forehand winner into the corner, winning the match in just over an hour.

Pegula, who reached the third round at Wimbledon last year, has set her sights on surpassing that achievement this year. With five previous Grand Slam quarter-final appearances, including the Australian Open in January, Pegula expressed confidence in her grass court abilities. She stated, “I definitely feel the best I’ve felt in my career on grass, which I guess is a little late at 29 but I’ll take it. I definitely feel I can go deep here… a short-term goal to get into the second week.”

In the next round, Pegula will face Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
