Pogacar’s camp stunned but ready to go all-in again to beat Vingegaard

Tadej Pogacar suffered a setback in the Tour de France’s time trial, leaving him with no choice but to give his all in the final Alpine stage. However, his chances of winning a third title are looking slim. Jonas Vingegaard, the current overall leader, dominated Pogacar in the time trial, increasing his lead to one minute and 48 seconds. Last year, Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma team outperformed Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates in the Alps, and this time, Vingegaard delivered a remarkable individual performance. Pogacar will have to take risks in the remaining stages, just as he did in the Pyrenees last year, where he ultimately faltered. The upcoming 17th stage presents an opportunity for Pogacar to strike back, with challenging climbs and an uphill finish. However, Pogacar’s sports director acknowledges Vingegaard’s superior form and believes attacking is the only option. Pogacar’s ability on steep sections gives him an advantage, but his psychological recovery and overall form remain uncertain. UAE Emirates team manager Mauro Gianetti acknowledges the difficulty of dropping Vingegaard but emphasizes Pogacar’s aggressive approach. Pogacar’s performance will depend on his physical condition and whether his previous wrist injury affects him. So far, Pogacar has struggled to gain a significant lead over Vingegaard in any stage. Additionally, the forecasted thunderstorms could potentially create a chaotic race, which may work in Pogacar’s favor.
