Pro-war Putin critic and nationalist Girkin detained in Moscow

Russian nationalist Igor Girkin, who has been a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin and the Russian army’s handling of the war in Ukraine, was detained by Russian investigators on Friday. This move, reported by Girkin’s wife, lawyer, and the RBC news outlet, indicates that the authorities have grown tired of his criticism of Russia’s “special military operation.” The detention of Girkin follows the failed mutiny led by another outspoken critic, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has since reduced his own verbal attacks. Girkin, also known as Igor Strelkov, played a role in Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the organization of pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine. He was also sentenced to life in absentia by a Dutch court for his alleged involvement in the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. Despite his background and connections to the authorities, Girkin had become more outspoken in recent months. In May, he announced the establishment of the “Club of Angry Patriots” to enter politics and address what he saw as the military failures in Ukraine. Girkin’s wife confirmed his detention, stating that representatives of the Investigative Committee took him from their home. She expressed uncertainty about his whereabouts and revealed that he had been charged with extremism. The authorities have not provided any comment on the matter. According to Girkin’s lawyer, it remains unclear why his client was detained. RBC reported that Girkin’s Moscow home was being searched, and he was detained based on a complaint filed by a former Wagner employee. Tatiana Stanovaya, founder of the R.Politik analysis firm, believes that Girkin’s arrest was long desired by the individuals in charge of Russia’s law enforcement and power ministries. She sees it as a consequence of Prigozhin’s mutiny, which has given the army’s command greater political influence to suppress its opponents in the public sphere. Stanovaya views Girkin’s detention as a warning to other critics of Russia’s approach to the war in Ukraine that they could also face prosecution.
