PSG to begin Ligue 1 title defence against Lorient

Paris St Germain will kick off their Ligue 1 title defense against Lorient at home in the opening weekend of the 2023-24 season, according to the recently released fixtures. The new season, starting on August 12, will consist of only 34 matchdays due to the reduction of teams from 20 to 18, with two clubs promoted from the second tier and four Ligue 1 teams relegated. PSG will then face Toulouse, the French Cup winners, before welcoming last season’s runners-up, Lens. Lens, who finished just one point behind PSG, will begin their campaign against Brest, while Olympique de Marseille, who finished third, will host Stade de Reims. On matchday six, PSG will face arch-rivals Marseille in the highly anticipated ‘Le Classique’ on September 24. Despite the turmoil at the club last season, PSG clinched their 11th Ligue 1 title after being eliminated from the Champions League in the last-16. Lionel Messi, the seven-times Ballon d’Or winner, chose not to renew his contract with PSG and joined Inter Miami after being booed by the fans. In the Ligue 2 fixtures, Annecy was not included in the list despite their announcement that they would remain in the second-tier after being relegated last season. This decision was a result of the governing body LFP awarding Rodez the victory in the final game of the Ligue 1 season against Girondins de Bordeaux, which was abandoned due to a fan’s assault on a player. As a consequence, Rodez remained in Ligue 2 while Annecy was relegated. Annecy had attempted to persuade the LFP to make Ligue 2 a 21-club competition but failed. However, Annecy later claimed that since Sochaux had been administratively relegated by the DNCG, the entity that oversees clubs’ finances, a spot was available for them to stay in Ligue 2. Sochaux, who are set to start their season against Troyes, have stated that they will appeal the decision.
