US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin may meet in June, RIA news agency reported on Sunday, citing a Kremlin aide, amid escalating tensions between Moscow and the West. Yuri Ushakov, Kremlin’s foreign policy advisor, said a final decision about the meeting was not yet made.

Moscow’s ambassador to the United States from 1998 to 2008, Ushakov, was quoted as saying, “We will make a decision depending on many factors. Separately, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister cited by RIA, said on Sunday that Washington’s proposal for the summit is now under official consideration, adding that it was taken positively by Russia.

This comes after earlier in April, the newly-elected Democratic President Joe Biden called on his Russian counterpart to ease tension between the archrivals, with the latest tensions stirred by Kremlin’s military presence on the Ukrainian border. Not only that, but the White House also proposed talks to end the issues between the two nations.

On the other hand, Russia responds with calls to defer American plans to imposed additional sanctions on Moscow to pave the way for a bilateral summit. Last month, after Biden called Putin a murderer in an interview, the tensions between the two rivals escalated to the new post-Cold-War low. In response to Biden’s comments, Kremlin recalled its ambassador to the US.

Although Moscow called on the US to scrap its plans to imposed additional sanctions, Washington pushed ahead with its decision to impose a series of restrictions and sanctions this month over its alleged involvement in the November presidential election. Last week, the Russian president joined a virtual summit on climate change hosted by the US.
