Rahm Emanuel Sworn in for Second Term as Chicago’s Mayor

On Monday Rahm Emanuel was sworn in for his second term as Chicago’s mayor. When he took the stage to give his inaugural address Emanuel really only talked about one thing and that was the youths of Chicago.

It was like a call to action to help the disadvantage youth in Chicago, to help stop gang violence. Knowing that these kids are more than some violence and crime.

Emanuel said that, “Building that stronger future for Chicago requires us to focus on a difficult subject that is too often ignored in our civic conversation. It is ignored precisely because it is so hard to talk about. So today, as we inaugurate the stewards of our city for the next four years, I want to use this moment to shine a spotlight on preventing another lost generation of our city’s youth.”

He goes onto say, “The faces of these lost and unconnected young men and women are often invisible — until we see them in a mug shot as the victim or the perpetrator of senseless violence. Their existence is avoided rather than confronted. They live in the shadows of our cities — and in the recesses of our minds. But we must make them ever-present in our conversation.”

As expected Emanuel was criticized for not mentioning the financial status of Chicago and what he was going to do to help the pension crisis.

However, there were some that appreciated his speech for what it was. Emanuel was really dressing what he has been criticized for before. Especially during the campaign by his opponent Jesus Garcia; which is that Emanuel does not pay much attention to the lower income neighborhoods, and focuses solely on the richer parts of Chicago.

With this speech that was all he talked about. Even though he did not bring up finances or the pension the city council meets on Wednesday to discuss just that.

The inaugural speech was more unconventional than most inaugural speeches, but it was a nice one.
