Resurgent Kenin proud to prove critics wrong with Wimbledon run

Sofia Kenin, who fell out of the top 200 last year after her 2020 Grand Slam success, has regained her form and impressed at Wimbledon. Despite facing setbacks such as injuries, COVID-19, a poor run of form, and a split with her father-coach, Kenin has managed to reach the third round of the tournament after coming through the qualifiers. In 2020, Kenin won the Australian Open and finished as a runner-up at Roland Garros, reaching a career-high ranking of number four in the world. However, her ranking dropped to 235 due to various challenges. Nevertheless, she has shown signs of reviving her career at the All England Club, defeating seventh seed Coco Gauff in the first round and Wang Xinyu in straight sets. Kenin expressed her excitement and determination to prove her critics wrong, emphasizing the hard work she has put in. She credited a close match with reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina earlier this year as a turning point in her confidence. Kenin also mentioned that playing the qualifiers helped her adjust to the grass surface, which is not her favorite. She acknowledged the tough opponents she faced in the qualifiers but highlighted the confidence she gained from those matches. Kenin’s success at Wimbledon has been a result of her perseverance and belief in her abilities.
