The newest edition to the much beloved Star Wars franchise, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has made $801.9 Million worldwide in under three weeks of being at the box office. On Monday, the film brought in $16 Million at the box office, however; it dropped to 4% on Sunday, then a drop to 50% from the previous Monday. These types of events usually take place this time in December. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows dropped in sales by 12% in its third Sunday of being in theaters, and then 44% compared to the Monday before in early 2012. In 2006, King Kong also fell from 12% to 41 Percent.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story managed to make it to the thirteenth spot for the biggest domestic hit, right in between E.T and Shrek 2. Rogue One made $440.9 million for its 18th day. E.T grossed $435 million and Shrek 2 grossed $441 million on their 18th day, respectively. Although Rogue One put up a good fight, it hasn’t broken its predecessor’s record, The Force Awakens, which brought in $750 million on its 18th day. Rogue One, however, can still make $550 million in total as long as it stays on the road Force Awakens has. Unfortunately, that might not be possible.
The January line-up may stop Star Wars in its tracks. Hidden Figures and Underworld: Blood Wars are opening up in 2,300 theaters. La La Land and A Monster Calls are opening up in 15,000 theaters. Next weekend will also be a challenge because Live by Night, Silence, Monster Trucks, and Sleepless will make their debut. Chances are each one is going to open up in about 15,000 theaters. To be brief, Star Wars will be losing a lot of money from the opening of these films.
Overall, Rogue One has made a lot of strides since its release. It has grossed quite a bit of money overseas. Some of the countries where Rogue One is enjoying a good run include the U.K which was $66.7 million, Japan ($26m), Germany ($35m), and France ($30m). It won’t do as well as Force Awakens, but it still came out successful and that’s all that matters. The film has yet to open in China, so the world will see what will happen then. Either way, Rogue One has enjoyed a good run.
