Ron DeSantis criticized over ‘homophobic’ video

Gay Republicans have criticized a video posted by Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis’ campaign, calling it “homophobic.” The video highlights rival Donald Trump’s past statements in support of gay rights. At a rally, Trump chose not to respond to the attack. DeSantis’ campaign posted the video on Twitter, stating that it marked the end of LGBTQ+ pride celebrations. The video contrasts Trump’s previous pledge to protect LGBTQ+ citizens with DeSantis’ conservative stance on transgender and other LGBTQ+ rights. The origin of the video is unclear, but it features muscle-bound men, bolts of electricity from DeSantis’ eyes, and activists expressing concerns about his efforts to restrict transgender rights. Richard Grenell, the first openly gay White House Cabinet official, criticized the video as homophobic. As governor, DeSantis has supported state laws limiting medical treatment for transgender children and prohibiting minors from attending drag shows in Florida. DeSantis’ campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Trump, who is ahead of DeSantis in public opinion polls, did not address the video at a rally in South Carolina. Instead, he criticized sporting events that allow transgender women to compete in women’s competitions. Trump pledged to keep men out of women’s sports. While Trump promised to protect gay rights at the 2016 Republican National Convention, he faced criticism for banning transgender people from the military and proposing to remove protections for transgender individuals facing healthcare discrimination during his presidency. When asked about the video, Trump’s campaign referred to a tweet from adviser Jason Miller, suggesting that someone would be fired over the DeSantis campaign’s post. The Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative group advocating for gay rights, stated that Republicans should oppose “radical Left gays,” but believed DeSantis had gone too far. They accused him of venturing into homophobic territory.
